Where the Wild Things Grow, 2023
Linoleum Block and Collagraph, 9’’x12’’
As I began this piece I was frustrated and anxious about where it would go. Working in a medium that was unfamiliar at the time I was too focused on perfection and the final product than the process. Growth takes a long time and sometimes a lot of failure. Being pushed to start making this piece really is what was the catalyst for this concept. I was instructed just to make an image that I enjoy and worry about the rest as I worked. As resentful as I was of this it taught me a lot about how we process and grow from doing and waiting.
Drawing inspiration from Ann Hamilton’s “Making not Knowing” I jumped right into this piece hoping to find inspiration along the way. That is exactly what happened. There is a lot of value in the waiting. What would we learn if we did not have to wait for anything? We may have results but we would have no foundation. I chose to depict that through a series of flowers varying in meaning and significance to me and to the viewer. We all grow through our perspective and that is how I want the viewers to see this.
